The Tucson Airport Authority board of directors authorized staff to initiate contract negotiations with consultants Leo A. Daly for design of improvements to the concourses at Tucson International Airport.

The project goal is to match the concourses with the recently completed terminal expansion to integrate the architecture of the two areas to create a continuous flow from the front door of the terminal to the departure gate.

Several immediate issues need to be addressed including reconfiguring the security checkpoints, designing adequate space for meeters and greeters pre-security; adding restroom facilities, and assessing how many gates will be needed to accommodate future demand.

As part of the TIA Master Plan Update, completed in late 2004, the capacity and growth requirements for the terminal complex were reviewed providing a detailed blueprint that forecasts the square footage required to handle seven million passengers the ultimate capacity of the terminal.

The costs of the future expansion, as well as the design, are yet to be determined. Construction on the improvements, which will be phased, are expected to start in 2006.
