OPERATION "BIG POUR" SCHEDULED AT TIA
Nearly 100 cement trucks, one every four minutes, will deliver concrete to Tucson International Airport Thursday, August 30, starting at 8 p.m. Operation "Big Pour" will deposit 900 yards of concrete, ranging in depth from 2'6" to 4', over 297,000 lbs. of rebar in the center section of the upper level roadway.
This is the next phase of construction on the roadway project currently underway at TIA and is a preliminary step to remodeling the front of the terminal to expand baggage claim and the ticketing area.
It's all part of the $66 million terminal expansion project begun last fall and scheduled for completion at the end of 2003. By early next year a new rental car building and 2,100 car parking structure will be open as well as the new roadway.
This paves the way, literally for bumping the front of the terminal building forward about 50' and adding over 80,000-sq. ft. to ticketing and baggage. At the same time several infill projects will occur on the concourses including expanded gate space, additional concession space and more bathrooms.
TAA reserves will finance the construction of the $16.5 million rental car facility project which will be repaid by fees generated from the rental car companies. The terminal roadway construction is being financed through Passenger Facility Charges, PFCs, a $3 fee imposed by airports on departing passengers.
