TERMINAL EXPANSION IS TAKING OFF FOR TOMORROW
At their meeting today, the Tucson Airport Authority board of directors authorized staff to proceed with negotiations with Walker Parking Consultants to design a three level, 1,500 space parking structure at Tucson International Airport.
Estimated to cost $16.5 million, the structure will be located in front of the terminal in the existing parking lot and will include spaces for both long and short term parking.
"Walker was hired by TAA in the late 1980's to design a structure but the project was postponed when passenger enplanements dropped, not only in Tucson, but nationwide," explained TAA President & CEO Walter A. Burg. "Passenger loads and parking demand have increased sufficiently to make this project viable and necessary in order to accommodate current demand and future growth."
Also included in the project is a new seven lane exit plaza and an adjacent 1,500 sq. ft. office building for parking lot administration.
TAA expects to review designs before the end of the year and start construction in mid-2002.
Local architects, The Durrant Group, will collaborate on the project along with the Tucson civil engineering firm David Evans and Associates.
