VIDRIO VOLANDO (GLASS FLYING):
ART GLASS EXHIBIT BY SONORAN GLASS ART ACADEMY
AND OTHER EXHIBITS AT TUCSON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Vidrio Volando (Glass Flying) is currently on display at Tucson International Airport (TIA) in the center gallery. The exhibit features glass art by the instructors and students of the Sonoran Glass Art Academy, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting appreciation and awareness of glass artists and glass as a visual arts medium through instructional programming.

Created with an informal discussion between glass artists Tom Philabaum and Dave Klein while they were teaching at the Sunpu Studio in Shizoka, Japan, the Academy set out to introduce all forms of glass techniques to the glass artists of the southwest. That vision became a reality in 2000.

Glass artisans participating in the airport exhibition are: Paul Anders-Stout, Alexandra Berger, Joshua Castleberry, Shane Fero, Doug Frates, John Gwinn, Aaron Haenel, Bronwen Heilman, Rashan Omari Jones, William Justiniano, Sean M. Lewis, Jason Marstall, Katherine Nesci, Tom Philabaum, Vicky Stromee, Karl Taylor, Kate Drew-Wilkinson, and Margaret Zinser.

This fine art glass exhibit continues through December 31, 2007. For more information about the Sonoran Glass Art Academy visit www.sonoranglass.org.

Also new, Work on Paper from Paul Jaffe. Jaffe began experimenting with new digital technologies after he retired from dentistry in the 1990s. By using tools provided by the Adobe Photoshop software, Jaffe experimented with transforming images, such as family photographs, famous paintings and his own digital photos from exotic places into collage and more abstract imagery.

Jaffe discovers patterns, relocates them, doubles them, flattens them, stretches and crunches them until they virtually explode with color and multiple forms. This manipulative process often results in dense multi-layered surfaces that reveal complex mutated structures.

Works on Paper is located in the TIA Upper Link Gallery through November 30, 2007. For more information visit http://www.pauljaffe.com.

In the TIA Lower Link Gallery, Barbara Brandel’s 2-D mixed media assemblages with buttons and stamps make up Flights of Fancy. This show includes stamps from Brandel’s travels around the world. This exhibit ends November 30, 2007. For more information visit http://artistsregister.com/artists/AZ90.

On display in the center point, ticketing level, the Arizona Historical Society has assembled a photo exhibit commemorating Charles Lindbergh’s landing in Tucson 80 years ago. This exhibit will be on display through December 2007. For more information about the Society, visit www.arizonahistoricalsociety.org.

These exhibits are a part of the TIA’s Arts & Culture Program. To learn more visit www.tucsonairport.org.
