Transportation Security Administration Launches
Secure Flight Program August 15

Starting August 15, 2009, the second phase of the multi-phase Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Secure Flight program will go into effect. Under the program, some airlines will begin asking passengers to book travel reservations under the same name that appears on their government ID that will be used when traveling, along with date of birth and gender. Not all airlines will begin requesting additional information at the same time. TSA is partnering with each airline to phase in the additional information requirements when the airline's reservation system is able to accept it. When fully implemented by early 2010, all airlines will be required to collect the specific passenger information.

The collection of additional information is part of an effort by TSA to enhance the pre-flight security process and is intended to help passengers whose names are similar to those on watch lists avoid misidentification. Secure flight does not affect the security screening that takes place at the airport.

Further information about the new program is available on the Transportation Security Administration web site at www.tsa.gov.
