RYAN AIRFIELD MASTER PLAN UPDATE
PUBLIC MEETING NOVEMBER 9
The Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) is hosting a public meeting to review the final draft of the Ryan Airfield Master Plan Update on Monday, November 9, 2009, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Ryan Airfield Administration Building, 9698 W. Ajo Way. The event is free and open to the public.
Updated approximately every five to seven years, the Master Plan Update is a 20-year blueprint that responds to future airport demand by guiding the timely development of new or expanded facilities. The Update is used to evaluate the airport’s capabilities, infrastructure needs and role in the economy in relationship to forecasted aviation activity. The Update also provides recommendations for ensuring compatible land uses surrounding the airport.
Ryan Airfield is a general aviation airport located approximately 12 miles west of Tucson International Airport. It was created during World War II as a pilot training base. Ryan graduated 6,000 pilots in two years before it closed its school in 1944.
Ownership of the airfield was transferred by the federal government to the State of Arizona in 1948, and in 1951 the State executed a lease agreement with the Tucson Airport Authority to manage the airfield. Ownership of the land was transferred by the State to the City of Tucson in 1960 along with the lease with the TAA.
A copy of the draft report is available online at http://tucsonairport.org/ga/html/ga_ryan_master.html.
